About Janalee Swain:

Raised by musicians, Janalee Swain has spent most of her life as a student of sound. Although the majority of her background is as a Jazz pianist, in 2001 her musical spectrum expanded when she began collaboration with the brothers Heneghan forming the band soon to be known as MayaVada.

Since that time, Janalee has used music as a medium for self discovery. Her more recent collaborations with socially conscious hip-hop artist Momo Smitt and her simultaneous induction into the passionate world of Argentine Tango are the inspirations behind the release of her new solo E.P. "Learning To See In The Dark".

“Poema No. 12” – A synthesis of the music “Poema” with the poetry of Oliverio Girondo, this film is an elegant and longing look at what is created when two people come together in the dance of Tango. (Runtime: 4min)

“Malevo Bordona” – A limitless exploration into the interior life of a tango dancer, “Malevo Bordona” wrestles with desire, hope, ego, confidence, insecurity, history, loss and every other fractured aspect of the soul—and finds a beautiful balance and harmony. (Runtime: 4min)

“Matungo” – This short experimental documentary features several dancers from the Portland Argentine Tango community explores the varied spectrum of our unique and personal experiences of tango and discovers they intersect to give us all a shared meaning of this dance and music. (Runtime: 3.5min)

About Mauricio Carvajal

Mauricio Carvajal has been part of the Portland Tango scene for a short time but has had an intimate connection to Argentine tango since early in his childhood. He currently holds the position of Creative Services Director for the local Univision affiliate; this will be the third of his independent film projects designed around Argentine tango music and the Argentine tango experience. Starting Saturday, May 14th, the "aime comme moi" Milonga is changing nights to the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month at Tango Berretín.

Joe Leonardo’s milonga on the 1st and 3rd Friday on the month at Berretín will continue through April with the final Friday being May 6 and Megan Pingree's milonga at Berretín will continue on its regularly scheduled Friday.

This is an exciting change! Joe Leonardo will continue to DJ, teach and host, and to kick off the new night there will be a very special event (T.B.A.)!

So many members of the Portland Tango Community (over 60 people!) were involved with the production of this wonderful film and it means so much to us to be able to share it with all of you!

The Film:
“Oh My, What a Night!” (Episode #3 of the Tango Silent Films Project)
Runtime 11.5 minutes
Description: Follow our hero, Buddy St. Cloud, and his fellow silent film characters as they navigate through the rich and sometimes confusing culture of tango, learning just what it takes to get a dance. “Oh My, What a Night!” is a short silent film with an Argentine Tango soundtrack in the style of 1920’s “two-reelers” that’s full of laughs, surprises and fun.

The Dance:
The film will be screened during a very special Tango Silent Films themed “aime comme moi” Milonga Argentine tango social dance party). Come dressed up in vintage-esque attire if you like and take part in the zany spirit and mad-capped fun of the tango film world that we are creating. If you are new to Argentine tango, Joe Leonardo will be offering a wonderful beginner’s class this evening from 8 to 9pm.

Casting Call for next Tango Silent Film by Joe Leonardo

As many of you know, I completed my first short film in December and am hard at work doing pre-production for my next project. Many great people from the tango community have jumped on board with me to be part of the crew, and now we need people who would like to be the stars!

Like my first project, this will be a silent film with a tango soundtrack. The story will also be much more tango-related this time. There are four roles I need to fill. Here are the character descriptions:

Molly: A sweet, innocent and pure hearted woman excited to learn all about the Argentine Tango. Although somewhat timid and reserved, she is very pretty—in a plain-jane sort of way—as well as very smart and observant.

Sally: A bold and confident woman who knows that she is sexy and flaunts it. She loves attention and that’s probably why she likes Argentine Tango so much. She can be competitive, manipulative and rude, but also coquettish, seductive and very charming—sometimes all at once.

Jack: A very egotistical Argentine Tango teacher. Handsome and charming, confident to an extreme, he is also very self-centered to the point of being absent-minded about anything that isn’t about him.

Woman #3: Sultry, alluring and mysterious with a brief but memorable part in this film.

What we are looking for:

· Be a part of the Portland Argentine Tango community.

· Have time to do a quick audition/screen test.

· Be available for two full days of filming (most likely March 27^th & 28^th)

· Level of dancing ability is not important, but familiarity with the dance and dance culture is helpful.

· No previous acting experience necessary. We just need people who are enthusiastic for the project and open-minded to learning together as we go along.

· Your full name

· Your email and phone number

· A simple photo of you (doesn’t have to be fancy)

· Your height

· The height of your tango heels.

We are trying to do this film on a zero budget, just for fun and love, so all work is volunteered.

Results for the DJ/Music Survey for the Tuesday Practica at bamboo Grove

I am very pleased to say that I got a ton of great responses to the Music/DJ Survey that I sent out last week. 43 people participated in the survey and everyone offered excellent comments and suggestions, as well as incredibly valuable feedback on the ideas I submitted to you.

And here's the shorthand for how I'll be DJing at the Practica based on how you all responded:

I will play short cortinas
I will play 80% Traditional, 20% alternative music
I will feature a different orchestra every week from 9 to 10pm, plus have extra info about the featured info during that hour.
I won't play chacareras during the practica (but maybe play them when the practica is over).
I will be DJing the practica differently than I would a milonga, but I will continue to play great music!

"Knowing the Orchestras"

In this special 2-hour workshop, we will explore in depth the major Tango Orchestras that we dance to at the milongas and which are the core of every tango DJ's music collection. We will examine the musical and stylistic qualities of the different orchestras, and how they affect the dancer and the dance floor as a whole.

This class is for both DJs and dancers who want to develop a greater understanding of Argentine Tango music. The class will consist of listening to the music, exploring a tango DJ's library (via projected computer screen), discussion, and Q&A. A sample CD of the orchestras will also be available.

Time: Wednesday, July 29th, 7-9pm

Place: Tango Berretín, 6305 SE Foster Rd. Portland OR

Cost: $20/person ($15/students w/school ID)

*No experience or pre-registration required. You do not need to bring any equipment.*

I will be DJing at the Northstar Milonga this Thursday night!

And just to let you know, starting this month I will be DJing there every 2nd Thursday of the month, with Jerry Wallach hosting. Northstar old school, Tango Rock!

Special DJ Workshop with Joe Leonardo Wed 7-9pm, June 24, 2009

In this special 2-hour workshop, we will cover all of the essentials of DJing a milonga from using the equipment to understanding the great tango bands to construction of tandas and playlists. From there, we will explore the art of DJing in terms of how the music affects the dancers. In the class, expect a wealth of information, discussion, multimedia, and hands-on experience.

This class is perfect for both aspiring DJs looking to learn how to break into the trade and dancers who just want to develop more understanding of Argentine Tango music and appreciation of what makes a good DJ and a great night of dancing.

Time: Wednesday, June 24th, 7-9pm
Place: Tango Berretín, 6305 SE Foster Rd. Portland OR
Cost: $20/person ($15/students w/school ID)
*No experience or pre-registration required. You do not need to bring any equipment.*

-The equipment (PAs, Laptops, Media Players, Sound files)
-Organizing your music collection
-Understanding the different Tango Orquestas
-Creating Tandas and Setlists
-Managing the Milonga –creating great nights for everyone…
